Softcat is a leading provider of IT infrastructure. It's a vibrant place to work with a strong emphasis on employee satisfaction. All staff and partners get together at their annual ‘Kick off’ weekend.

One of the initiatives launched at this event is the next ‘word of the year’. This word has contextual significance and provides focus and inspiration for year ahead.

I was asked to design a ‘word mark’ and visual language for the word ‘evolution’. The message was all about gradual change through the transition to a new CEO – steady growth, building on impressive success.

Evolution is conveyed in the letterforms morphing between lower and upper case. The idea had to work in print and as static slides but suggests motion in the quirky, in-between state of the transition. The design was featured on t-shirts for the 2000 people attending and in presentations. The idea was extended to an alphabet for name slides introducing the speakers. The word mark was adapted for single colour screen printing on give-away tote bags.
